This radio is designed to provide clear reception of FM and AM broadcasts, including Wide FM, and features pre-recorded nostalgic content from the Showa era, including valuable sound sources from NHK. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure proper operation and to maximize your listening experience.

This manual provides detailed instructions on setting up, operating, and maintaining your SUR-1 radio.

5. Setha

5.1 Ukunika amandla iyunithi

The SANSUI SUR-1 can be powered by either the included AC adapter or six (6) Size D dry cell batteries (sold separately).

  1. Insert the DC plug of the AC adapter into the DC 9V input jack on the back of the radio.
  2. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC 100V 50/60Hz wall outlet.

  2. Insert six (6) Size D dry cell batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.

Note: When both AC adapter and batteries are connected, the unit will primarily draw power from the AC adapter.

For optimal FM reception, ensure the FM antenna located on the rear panel is extended and positioned correctly. For AM reception, the unit has a built-in antenna, but rotating the unit may improve signal strength.

  • To turn on the radio, rotate the Power/Volume knob clockwise until you hear a click.

6.2 Tuning to FM/AM Radio

  2. Use the Band Selector switch to choose either "FM" or "AM".
  3. Slowly rotate the Tuning Dial to scan for radio stations. The frequency will be indicated on the analog display.
  4. Adjust the FM antenna for best FM reception. For AM, try rotating the entire unit.

The radio supports Wide FM (76-108MHz) and FM stereo, as well as AM (531-1629KHz).

6.3 Playing Pre-recorded Showa Channels

The SUR-1 features 8 channels of pre-recorded nostalgic content. To access these:

  2. Press one of the Channel Buttons (1-8) to start playback of the corresponding content.
  3. The channels include:
    • Channel 1: NHK News from the Showa Era

    • Channel 4: Nostalgic Songs / Children's Songs
    • Channel 5: 3-Minute Masterpiece Classics

    • Channel 8: Radio Calisthenics

6.4 Imisebenzi Yesibali sikhathi

The radio includes On-timer and Sleep timer functions. Refer to the specific buttons or menu options on your unit for detailed setup of these features.

6.5 FM/AM Auto Preset Function

The auto preset function allows the radio to automatically scan and save available FM and AM stations. Consult your unit's controls for initiating and managing this feature.

7. Isondlo

Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish.

When not in use for extended periods, store the radio in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If using batteries, remove them before storage to prevent leakage.
